I’m sure the title is a little misleading, but this is on a completely different issue - separate from the wank that has been going around tumblr today.
I haven’t seen anything going around tumblr regarding what happened. It’s been posted on Facebook, but after some discussion with some friends, and one other friend being unable to post about the issue, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to bring this here and circulate it around tumblr.
At the Saturday AnimeNEXT Homestuck photo shoot, the troll list had come down to Eridan. At that point, there was only one Eridan at the shoot, who I consider to be a friend of mine. After a few seconds of photo taking, for one reason or another, people started throwing buckets at him. Watching this happen from the sidelines, I go back and wish I had stepped in to say something, because not only was this completely uncalled for, immature, and out of line, but it was horribly dangerous to the cosplayer.
This was posted on the Otakon photo shoot page yesterday after the convention:
“Okay, I know this doesn’t relate to photoshoot requests per se, but given the most recent debacle at AnimeNEXT, I want to say this as a fair warning. If I so much as see one person throwing a bucket at another person, I am going to take it away from you. You will lose bucket privileges, because you obviously can’t handle such power. You’ll obviously get it back eventually but yeah. Temporary loss of bucket.
In all seriousness, though, yes, I know none of the buckets hit him, but that doesn’t change the fact that people lobbed buckets at my friend, and seriously, we don’t want another person getting hurt because of shit like this. Someone (a Karkat cosplayer) at a different con got hit in the head with a bucket that had a serrated edge and ended up bleeding. You’re not being cute, and you’re not being funny.”
According to the actual cosplayer this happened to, he had also had buckets thrusted in his face, and that he had almost been hit with them throughout the day.
The biggest problem with all of this, is that this whole scenario in general should not be happening in the first place. It doesn’t matter that none of the buckets hit him, it doesn’t matter if you were “trying to be funny”, or that your interpretation of the character is that he’s forever alone and that he’s always trying to fill buckets with someone, etc.
The thing that matters over all is that you shouldn’t do it.
Don’t throw buckets at people.
Ever.
