So back in middle school I will admit, I was a weeaboo. I tried learning Japanese and yes, I had to get all the newest manga that was out on the book shelves. I hung out with this group who were obsessed and thought it was cool to pretend you were in an anime. Everyone teased us for it but we didn’t care. We thought it was cool to be an outcast just like the Anime characters were from all the rest. There was a girl named Anne. She wore anime shirts, cat ears and would always get in trouble because she would say nonsense to people. In the eighth grade, she inappropriately touched another girl in the locker room and was expelled for it. Never heard from her again.

After the 9th grade I simmered down and pretty soon my anime obsession was completely over. I had gone back to the real world. I began to stop watching anime less and less and started watching more American sitcoms which I found more entertaining. I started dating this boy named Justin (5 years from last week) and he liked anime, around the same tone as I did. There was a near by convention in town so my boyfriend and I decided we were going to check it out. We refused to cosplay (because we find it a bit silly) so we thought we wouldn’t stick out in the crowd. 

Boy we were wrong.

After being there for 3 hours we decided to get lunch. Since this particular anime convention was held at a resort we decided to eat lunch next to a sunny area next to the pool. There was a nearby Hetalia gathering which was going to meet soon but we had no idea what would happen next.

Pretty soon, hundreds of Hetalia cosplayers were surrounding us. All squealing about artwork, someone video taping a couple of cosplayers who were grabbing at each other sexually, and what’s worse, they were actually taking off their clothes and wanting to go ‘Sexy Skinny Dipping’. Justin and I were uncomfortable and we got up to leave at once. But we didn’t get away that easily. My middle school friend Anne was there in her America cosplay. I haven’t seen or spoken to her in years but she quickly noticed me and tackled me to the ground. I almost banged my head on the concrete and Anne was proudly sitting on my stomach so I couldn’t escape. Justin was so shocked and quickly yelled at her to get off of me at once!

But did she listen? Oh no. She yelled in her high pitched voice “Nya! Don’t take my Russia away!” (I’m 6’3 and I’m taller than average). But it just got worse from there. The other Hetalia cosplayers were actually encouraging her! She quickly grabbed my breasts and I really thought she was going to do more. Everyone was shouting “America and Russia are doing something nasty!! Kawaii!! Real life Yaoi!” So the crowd kept getting larger and larger. At this point I was crying from embarrassment and Justin shoved her off, picked me off of the ground and he shouted he was calling security. Many of the cosplayers started yelling at us because Justin had hurt Anne by scrapping her knee when he pushed her off of me and she was crying from it.

We spoken to one of the hotel employees and soon Security came and kicked everyone out of the area. It turns out that the gathering were kicked out of the convention for the entire weekend and the hotel apologized for what happened with free room service for our entire stay.

The rest of the weekend was fun though! And I’m really happy Justin was there to save me.
